Doodle Coat Care Guide
A simple routine for a calmer, healthier-looking coat
Doodle and Poodle coats can trap loose hair close to the skin, so small, regular grooming sessions are usually easier than occasional long ones.
1. Set up a calm space
Choose a non-slip surface, keep sessions short, and use a lick mat or treats if they help your dog stay relaxed.
2. Work in small sections
Part the coat so you can brush from near the skin outward without scraping the skin. Support the hair with one hand and use gentle strokes with the other.
3. Check with a metal comb
After brushing, a stainless-steel comb should pass comfortably through each section. If it catches, stop and gently rework that area rather than pulling.
4. Focus on friction zones
Check behind the ears, under the collar or harness, the armpits, legs, tail, and around areas that get wet. These spots often tangle first.
5. Keep bath and nail care predictable
Brush out tangles before bathing, rinse thoroughly, dry the coat fully, and introduce nail tools gradually. Reward calm behavior throughout.
When to call a professional
Do not force a tool through tight mats. Contact a professional groomer for severe matting and a veterinarian for redness, sores, parasites, pain, or other health concerns.
